One of the things I love most about now living in Houston is the proximity to Galveston. I’ve always loved Galveston. By fond memories of days at the beach go back to childhood. Even when I lived in Austin, I always made time to have a few long weekends with friends and family down in Galveston.
The twins were 18 months old the first time they were introduced to Galveston, and…well, it did not go over well. They were afraid of the beach, the ocean, and everything associated with the trip. In some way it broke my heart because I am such a beach person. Since that time, I have taken my son Carson one other time, and he was afraid to walk on the sand. So, on a whim, I decided to make the drive down to Galveston on Saturday afternoon to give the beach experience another try with the twins. It was a beautiful, sunny day (though a bit chilly with the wind), and I had my fingers crossed that they would love it.
They loved it!
My daughter Kate played for hours in the sand. She was very focused on building a sand castle (she pronounces it “hand castle”). Carson just simply went wild running up and down the beach. I couldn’t believe this was the same boy who was terrified to leave the beach towel back in August. He wasn’t at all interested in playing in the sand, but spent his time running around and chasing seagulls. We had a great time, and will definitely be going back more often as the weather continues to warm up. Here are some snapshots from our afternoon at the beach…
